Le prétérit simple est employé afin de :
- présenter une action (ou un évènement) qui est totalement révolue, coupée du présent. La durée de l’acte n’a pas d’importance.
Lorsqu’une phrase contient une date ou un adverbe de temps, le prétérit est obligatoirement utilisé.

En anglais il existe 6 temps pour exprimer le passé :
- Le prétérit simple
Exemple : « I was home last night. » (Hier, j’étais chez moi.)
- Le prétérit continu
Exemple : « He was doing his homework when the phone rang. » (Il faisait ses devoirs lorsque le téléphone a sonné.)
- Le prétérit modal
